Maggie closed her eyes and tried to absorb the magnitude of Mitch’s plan. The facts as Mitch saw them were before her, barefaced. There was nothing to question, nothing to clarify. The path Mitch wanted her to travel was in front of her. She needed only to take the first step. She needed only to believe.

She whispered to Mitch, “You know this is crazy, right? You know it is. I’m not saying I’m willing to accept my condition, but this plan of yours….”

“Well, I’m certainly not going to accept it,” Mitch said. “Manuel saved my life that day, saved it with ancient magic and nothing else; and I’ll be damned if I’m not going to do everything in my power to make him do it again. I am not going to lose you, not like this.”

“This is madness,” Maggie said, “it will never work.” But she did not mean it. A small spark had ignited inside her when Mitch revealed his plan, and that spark was now a raging wildfire. Maggie had every faith in Mitch’s ability to save her life. She was utterly amazed at how much she believed it, so much so that she could not even say it out loud yet. His idea, his grand scheme had somehow given her hope again, and she could feel the strength returning to her body already. She only prayed she could sustain that strength through what was to come.
